Wig Care Guide

Your wig wardrobe is an investment that can last for many years with proper use and care. In order to keep your human hair wig looking its best it must be maintained with quality products. A NEW YOU WIGS strongly recommends The Nearly Natural Hair Collection. These revolutionary products consist of shampoos, conditioners and various styling aids. The products are effective and will not harm the lace, processing techniques or the human hair.

Attaching your lace wig

  • The first step in attaching your lace wig is determining what type of adhesive you will use. A NEW YOU WIGS strongly suggests you perform a patch test to ensure your skin does not react negatively to the adhesive. You should apply a small amount of the adhesive behind your ear and wait 24 hours to see if you have a reaction.

  • Prepare your own hair before attaching your lace wig. You should shampoo your hair and do a deep conditioning treatment. Apply leave in conditioner and allow your hair to dry thoroughly before attaching your wig. Either braid your own hair close to your scalp (cornrows) or wrap it flat to your head and secure with bobby pins or clips.

  • Once your hair is secure place your lace wig on your head placing the front hairline of the wig exactly with your hairline or 1/16th of an inch in front of it. If you are happy with the way your wig looks use an eyeliner pencil and lightly trace your natural hairline onto the lace front and back if applicable.

  • Put the hair in a pony tail and smooth the baby hairs back so they will not stick to the adhesive.

  • Remove the wig and cut off the excess lace with a pair of small sharp scissors. Take your time and follow the mark you made. Get as close to the hair as possible without cutting into the hair line.

  • Cleanse your forehead thoroughly with your normal cleanser and toner. Then wipe your hair line clean with 99% alcohol to remove any additional oils or debris around your hairline.

  • Allow skin to dry completely and then apply scalp protector around your hairline. Allow scalp protector to dry thoroughly.

  • Put on a flesh tone wig cap and line it up with your hairline ensuring it is completely covered. The cap will provide a protective layer for your hair and create a scalp illusion under your wig. To prevent the wig cap from slipping apply the glue to overlap onto the nylon stocking cap. This step is unnecessary if you do not have hair on your head.

  • Apply a thin layer of adhesive along the front of your hairline. Use the adhesive sparingly and allow it to dry or get tacky. You may use a blow dryer on a cool/warm setting to save drying time. Once this layer of adhesive dries you may want to use an additional application of adhesive to get a longer or more secure bond.

  • You may want to use adhesive or tape or a combination of both. You may also choose to apply adhesive on certain areas of the hairline and not the entire hairline. This is a very personal choice and you will need to find the solution that works best for you.

  • Once your adhesive is dry or tacky you are now ready to apply your lace wig. Place the wig on your head being careful to not let the lace touch your adhesive until it is placed properly. Start at the center of your head and then going from one side to the other, press the edge of the wig down into the adhesive using a fine tooth comb. Do not use your fingers so they don’t get sticky from the adhesive.

  • Check your hair-line and touch up any areas where the wig is not securely attached.

  • Allow the wig to set for about 15 minutes and repeat the steps to apply the wig in the back (if applicable) A NEW YOU WIGS recommends you sit under a cool/warm dryer for 30 minutes to allow the newly applied wig to set completely before styling.

  • Use a Q-tip and solvent if you need to remove any excess adhesive from your skin once the wig is set.

Removing your lace wig

  • Pull all hair into a ponytail and smooth back baby hairs.

  • Apply the lace adhesive remover on any remaining adhesive around the perimeter of the wig.

  • Gently remove the lace from the skin. Be careful and do not pull the wig off quickly. You should start at the back of the wig and gently release it and then move to the front and gently release it from side to side until you reach the center of the hairline and the wig is released from your skin.

  • Cleanse your lace and gently remove any adhesive residue from the lace with a towel.

Hair care instructions for your wig

Always keep your wig clean. A NEW YOU WIGS suggests you shampoo and condition your wig frequently (depending on your lifestyle) in warm or tepid water (not hot or cold). When dirty, hair products or sweat accumulate and the hair tangles and may matt and become destroyed.

Before shampooing your wig, spray a mixture of water and conditioner on the hair and brush from the bottom up. You must completely detangle the hair before shampooing so take your time and gradually wet the hair and brush it out.

After wetting the hair fill a basin with tepid water and shampoo and “swish” the wig through the water. You cannot shampoo the hair like your regular hair (scrunching and bunching the hair) or it will become tangled. Gently run your fingers through the hair in one direction. Rinse hair thoroughly with tepid water and squeeze the excess water gently with your hands.

If the hair texture is straight you can now use your brush on the hair. If the wig is curly you should not brush it while completely wet. Apply the leave in conditioner and place your wig on a wig head to dry completely.

Wig Care Tips

  • Always wear a swim cap when swimming in your human hair wig. A NEW YOU WIGS does not recommend swimming in synthetic wigs. Be sure to shampoo and condition hair immediately after swimming.

  • Braid your lace wig in a few large braids when going to sleep, swimming or exercising. Be sure to untangle hair before braiding. NEVER SLEEP ON WET HAIR. Be sure your hair is completely dry before lying down.

  • It is best to let hair dry naturally unless it is set and you are sitting under a warm (not hot) dryer.
A NEW YOU WIGS does not recommend the use of blow dryers on any of our wigs.

  • A NEW YOU WIGS does not advise coloring or relaxing hair that has already been processed. If you chose to do so you do it at your own risk.
